Toyota Tulsa- For many car manufacturers they are constantly thinking of the consumer and various drivers out there, but Toyota is taking it one step further with developing a device for the blind.
Toyota’s robotics division is revealing its latest invention for the blind. Developing a device that should help with guidance through indoor spaces will benefit the blind and visually impaired.
The project is known as Project BLAID. Project BLAID is a wearable device that is designed to help guide the blind and visually impaired through indoor spaces such as an office space or crowded shopping mall. The device resembles a soft neck pillow that is used to travel, but will only accompany one shoulder. The pillow-like device will contain cameras that Toyota claims can recognize escalators, stairs, and doors.
The device will also accompany speakers and vibration motors built into it. These will help the blind and visually impaired communicate information about the surroundings that they are experiencing. It will also feature:
- Voice recognition features
- Buttons that will allow users to interact with the device
- Help the user detect surroundings such as upcoming exit signs and bathroom signs
These features are pretty extraordinary because they can help detect those surroundings, as well as direct the user to those locations. For example, say the user needs to get the restroom. The restroom will be detected and help guide them to that destination, safely.
The best part about Toyota is that they aren’t just providing the world with safely made vehicles, they are also venturing out into the world to help others.
Doug Moore, manager of partner robotics at Toyota, stated, “Toyota is more than just the great cars and trucks we build; we believe we have a role to play in addressing mobility challenges, including helping people with limited mobility do more.”
The Project BLAID is meant to enrich the lives of people who are blind and visually impaired.
Keep your eyes on the news to see when this will be released!
